I RIDE 4 HELMETS
ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN
I RIDE 4 HELMETS is founded under the simple idea that all motorcycle riders deserve access to affordable, safe and certified helmets.
The goal of this campaign is to continuously educate riders and pillions on the importance and basic facts of wearing properly fitting, secured and certified helmets.Through this, we hope to increase use of helmets.
The initiative started off with an online campaign on Instagram and YouTube which included informative and educational videos.
This is our first helmet drive and we plan to make it an annual event to be held every September. The helmets will be donated to riders in the commercial sector (boda bodas, delivery riders, security firms riders) as well as pillions.
WHO IS BEHIND THE CAMPAIGN
The I RIDE 4 HELMETS is operated by myself (Wamuyu Kariuki).
I have ridden motorcycles since October 2015 and traveled to 20 countries on the motorcycles. I started off with a ZMR Karizma 223, moved to a Royal Enfield 350 bullet, KB 400 and currently riding a BMW 700 GS. Through my riding, I have been able to interact and experience the riding culture in different countries.
Of all types of injuries, those to the brain are among the most likely to result in death or permanent disability. During the two years traveling, I learned that the lack of use of helmets by riders is not unique to Kenya but it is a global issue. However, the prevalent rate is different in different countries and Kenya is among those with a high prevalence rate. 36% of patients who present to the emergency department because of a road traffic crash are motorcyclists; and 75% of these patients admitted to not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Helmet wearing among motorcycle passengers is as low as 3%.
The decision to launch the I RIDE FOR HELMETS campaign was informed by the need to create more awareness, sensitize and educate riders on the importance of wearing helmets. Road traffic crashes, injuries and deaths involving motorcycles has increased noticeably and is putting a heavy burden on families, communities and the health system in general.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
